December 2001 Cover

Dear friends,

Greetings to you from the St. Paul's College SCM Unit.

Its my privilege to bring you this magazine. This may not be the best of all the magazines but the effort given to it is worth a praise. This magazine is solely done with the help of all SCM student friends. Our dream is that one day this magazine would be a part of the SCM history in St. Paul's College.

We SCMites are trying our best to make this movement a success. We have had one day seminar in our college. We had invited students from different colleges. We would like to do more of these in future. Other than these we took part in different competition where our Choir team participated. We did not win any prize but our participation was the biggest prize for all of us.

We would try our best to take this magazine out every month. And to improve its quality and contents. We would be glad to receive suggestions and comments regarding this. You can even send articles for this magazine.

At this festive moment of Christmas We would like to wish all the members and staff of St. Paul's College, specially to our Principal, who helped us in every way and promised to do so, a very Happy and Prosperous Christmas and a Bright New Year. A Special thanks to Sandip Pramanik, our Program Secretary, to help us bring all our dreams in to reality.

With Warm Regards

Echo               by Doris Baa

A little boy got angry with his mother and shouted at her, "I hate you, I hate you." Because of fear of reprimand he ran out of the house.
He went up to the valley and shouted, " I hate you, I hate you," and back came the echo, " I hate you, I hate you."
This was the first time in his life he had heard an echo. He got scared, went to his mother for protection and said there was a bad boy in the valley that shouted, " I hate you, I hate you."
The mother understood and she asked her son to go back and shout, "I love you, I love you." The little boy went and shouted, " I love you, I love you," and back came the echo.

Dear friends,
Life is like an echo, we get back what we give. Whether it is our thoughts, actions or behavior, sooner or later they return and with great accuracy. So treat people with respect on your way up because you will be meeting them on your way down.

Friendship       by Gloria Gomes

This is a story of a young boy, who was in his early twenties. His name was Tamal. He was good looking and medium height had very expressive eyes and by his talks only he could win over the people heart. He was also quit talented. He could sing very well and could play the guitar also.

Tamal has three close friends one was Riplu, second was Rahul and the third one was Louis. They did there school together. One fine day Tamal got introduced to some boys and slowly slowly he got friendly to them. Tamal did not know in what trap he was fallen into. The boys he got friendly to were not good. They were all addicted to drugs and they pulled Tamal into it.

Now Tamal was addicted to drugs. He could not think of anything else but only drugs. His friends tried to make him understand that what he was doing was wrong. But there saying were all in vain.

One day Tamal and his friends went into a restaurant. Opposite them a group of girls were sitting and among the girls a girl was smoking a filter less cigarette. Tamal's friend Riplu saw this and commented that if the girls smoke a filter less cigarettes then what will the boys do. When the girl heard this, she got up from the seat and went to their table and answered back to them "she doesn't have money to buy a filtered cigarette and if they have enough money they can offer her a filtered cigarette."

When the girl told them this Tamal and all his friends were stunt. Riplu had no more words to say anything. All of sudden Tamal introduced himself to this girl and asked her if she would like to join them. The girl thought for a while then waved her hands to her friends and asked them to join the group.

The girl introduced herself as Devlina and so did the others. After this incident Devlina quite often meet with Tamal and his friends. As the days passed by Tamal started having a soft corner for Devlina. Even Devlina started having a soft corner for Tamal. But no one told each other and stayed as a good friend.

Devlina was a very challenging girl. She used to challenge Tamal in each and everything. When she came to know that Tamal takes drugs, she also started taking drugs. What Tamal used to take she used to take the double of it. Tamal couldn't tolerate this and so Tamal slowly slowly stopped taking drugs so that she might also stopped taking drugs. Later on Devlina also stopped taking in drugs.

Tamal couldn't believe that he has stopped taking in drugs. But why did he stop taking drugs! Only for Devlina. But who was Devlina for him. All these questions were puzzling Tamal and at last he realized that - Yes, he was in love and girl whom he loved was Devlina.

There relation was going on very smoothly when lately started to avoid Tamal. Tamal couldn't find the reason why she was doing so. He was very much puzzled. But then Tamal came to know the reason why she was doing so. Ho couldn't believe his ears when he heard that Devlina was suffering from blood cancer and her life span has been shortened. He couldn't bear this news. He was shattered down and started crying like a baby. He felt so weak.

Tamal meet Devlina and told her that he wants to marry her. But Devlina refused to accept the proposal. She told him that she always loved him as a friend and nothing more than that. But this was not actually the truth, she loved him very much but because of her illness she was saying so.

But Tamal also told Devlina that if he is going to marry anyone than the girl is going to be Devlina and it is true. Tamal is still waiting for

Devlina that she would come someday to him and say, "Yes Tamal, I am ready to marry you. But he doesn't know when the day will come or whether it will come or not. But he is still waiting for her.

WHERE DOES IT END?    by Doris Baa

This is a story about a wealthy farmer who was once offered all the land he could walk on in a

day, provided he came back by sundown to the point he started.

The next day early morning the farmer starting covering ground quickly because he wanted to get as much land as he could. Even though he was tired, he kept going all afternoon because he didn't wanted to miss this once-in-a-life-time opportunity to gain more wealth.
Late in the afternoon he realized the condition he had to fulfill to get the land he has get back to the stating point by sundown. His greed has gotten him for enough. He started his journey, keeping an eye on how close he was to sundown. The closer it got to the sundown, the faster he ran.
He was exhausted, out of breath and pushed himself beyond the point of endurance. He collapsed upon reaching the starting point and died. He did make it before the sundown
He was buried and all the land he needed was a small plot.

Dear friends,
There is a lot of truth in this story and a lesson to be learned. Whether the farmer was wealthy or not, any greedy person would have ended the same way. Greed is like sea water, the more you drink the thirstier you get

History of SCM     From Internet

Early Days

The Student Christian Movement came into being towards the end of last century. Beginning as a loose network of students dedicated to missionary work overseas, it rapidly broadened its aims and membership to become the largest student organization in Britain. This position was maintained until, with the Movement's encouragement and help, the National Union of Students (NUS) was formed in 1922.

Always committed to being socially and politically aware, ecumenical and with an open and enquiring approach to Christian faith, the SCM were some of the 'founding fathers' of the modern ecumenical movement. According to Archbishop William Temple, the event would never have taken place without the SCM. It was also SCM's belief that students should apply their critical faculties as much to their faith as to their studies that led to fourteen groups breaking away to form what is now known as the UCCF (Universities and Colleges Christian Fellowship).

The Middle Ages

In the late fifties and sixties there was an unprecedented expansion in Higher education and with that came university chaplains who, to all intents and purposes, were doing the same work as SCM. The result was a Movement which instead threw itself into the social and political questions of the period with a zeal unparalleled in other religious quarters. Unfortunately it also moved further and further away from its original Christian standpoint and

at the same time distanced itself from many of the very students it existed to serve.

Modern Times

In the seventies and eighties there was a radical restructuring and a renewed commitment to concentrate on the mainstream of student life. The result was a stronger organization with many more groups, from a handful in 1975 to over 70 in the 1990s.

SCM in the nineties has taken on a different shade. Owing to tightening financial pressures, changes in higher education affecting students' time and interests, the need for a refocusing of SCM's priorities was recognized. The staff were relocated to Birmingham and students were encouraged to use the Movement and its staff as a resource for the exploration of a radical Christianity for the nineties.

MAKE A FRIEND       by Isbela Kujur

FRIENDS ARE SEASONS,
WHICH KEEP CHANGING.
FRIENDS ARE LIKE WINDS,
WHICH COME AND GO.
FRIENDS ARE LIKE RAIN,
WHICH FALL AND STOP.
FRIENDS ARE PRECIOUS,
IN OUR LIFE.
FRIENDS ARE THOSE WHO
BRING JOY IN ONE'S LIFE.
FRIENDS ARE THOSE WHO
REMOVE PAIN IN ONE'S LIFE.
FRIENDS ARE THOSE WHO
LEAVE AND GO AWAY.
FRIENDS ARE MANY AND THEY,
NEVER LAST LONG.
INSTEAD OF HAVING "FRIENDS"
WHO STAYS WITH YOU IN ALL
YOUR PAINS AND YOUR JOYS
SO MAKE A FRIEND AND NOT
MANY FRIENDS.

MAKE YOUR FRIENDSHIP LAST FOR LONG.
UNTIL THE TIME YOU ARE
DEAD AND GONE.

ONE DAY SEMINAR        by Regina

It was the 17th of September 2001; we had a Seminar held at our College. St. Paul's CM College. Though the previous night was not in our favor nor was the early morning of 17th because the roads of Amherst Street were flooded, we lost
hope for the Seminar to be a successful one. All the St. Paul's College students were present. Due to rain we thought its
only we who has to attend the Seminar. Then we found slowly slowly other college students were coming in. the other colleges were as follows Scottish Church, Bishop's College and St. Xavier's College.

The main of the Seminar was Inter Religious Dialogue and Globalization. We were all later divided into four groups. Each group consists of 11 to 12 members. Each group were given questions on which they had a group discussion and from
every group the leader shared their views which every individual discussed in the group. The open discussion also led to argument and clarifications. They were members present for the Seminar. Then we had a delicious lunch. Everyone enjoyed the lunch. Thus, I would say before ending it was a successful Seminar to some extent but not a perfect one. But it was the beginning of a successful achievement. But we should no forget "Failure is the door step to Success." Thus, in the future we hope that we will arrange a much better Seminar than this one. But for this, we need everyone's cooperation because everyone's cooperation will give us a 100% result. In a special way on behalf of St. Paul's CM College I would like to thank all
the students of various colleges who attended the Seminar in spite they don't have S.C.M.I in their colleges. So, once again thank you.
