Dear friends, Greetings to you from the St. Paul's College SCM Unit. Its my privilege to bring you this magazine. This may not be the best of all the magazines but the effort given to it is worth a praise. This magazine is solely done with the help of all SCM student friends. Our dream is that one day this magazine would be a part of the SCM history in St. Paul's College. We SCMites are trying our best to make this movement a success. We have had one day seminar in our college. We had invited students from different colleges. We would like to do more of these in future. Other than these we took part in different competition where our Choir team participated. We did not win any prize but our participation was the biggest prize for all of us. We would try our best to take this magazine out every month. And to improve its quality and contents. We would be glad to receive suggestions and comments regarding this. You can even send articles for this magazine. At
this festive moment of Christmas We would like to wish all the members
and staff of St. Paul's College, specially to our Principal, who helped
us in every way and promised to do so, a very Happy and Prosperous Christmas
and a Bright New Year. A Special thanks to Sandip Pramanik, our Program
Secretary, to help us bring all our dreams in to reality.
With Warm Regards Subhadip

History of SCM From Internet Early Days The Student Christian Movement came into being towards the end of last century. Beginning as a loose network of students dedicated to missionary work overseas, it rapidly broadened its aims and membership to become the largest student organization in Britain. This position was maintained until, with the Movement's encouragement and help, the National Union of Students (NUS) was formed in 1922. Always committed to being socially and politically aware, ecumenical and with an open and enquiring approach to Christian faith, the SCM were some of the 'founding fathers' of the modern ecumenical movement. According to Archbishop William Temple, the event would never have taken place without the SCM. It was also SCM's belief that students should apply their critical faculties as much to their faith as to their studies that led to fourteen groups breaking away to form what is now known as the UCCF (Universities and Colleges Christian Fellowship). The Middle Ages In the late fifties and sixties there was an unprecedented expansion in Higher education and with that came university chaplains who, to all intents and purposes, were doing the same work as SCM. The result was a Movement which instead threw itself into the social and political questions of the period with a zeal unparalleled in other religious quarters. Unfortunately it also moved further and further away from its original Christian standpoint and at the same time distanced itself from many of the very students it existed to serve. Modern Times In the seventies and eighties there was a radical restructuring and a renewed commitment to concentrate on the mainstream of student life. The result was a stronger organization with many more groups, from a handful in 1975 to over 70 in the 1990s. SCM
in the nineties has taken on a different shade. Owing to tightening
financial pressures, changes in higher education affecting students'
time and interests, the need for a refocusing of SCM's priorities was
recognized. The staff were relocated to Birmingham and students were
encouraged to use the Movement and its staff as a resource for the exploration
of a radical Christianity for the nineties. MAKE A FRIEND by Isbela Kujur FRIENDS
